Introduction

Nonylphenols are a family of closely related organic compounds called alkylphenols. They are used in manufacturing antioxidants, lubricating oil additives, laundry and dish detergents, emulsifiers, and solubilizers.[2] These compounds are also precursors to the commercially important non-ionic surfactants alkylphenol ethoxylates and nonylphenol ethoxylates, which are used in detergents, paints, pesticides, personal care products, and plastics. Nonylphenol has attracted attention due to its prevalence in the environment and its potential role as an endocrine disruptor and xenoestrogen, due to its ability to act with estrogen-like activity.

Applications

Alkylphenols are subjected to ethoxylation to give alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs), which are widely used as industrial surfactants

They are used in the processing of wool and metals, as emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization, as laboratory detergents, and as pesticides

Industrial and institutional surfactants led by nonylphenol ethoxylates; phosphite antioxidants led by tris(4-nonylphenyl) phosphite for rubber and plastics

Lube oil additives( corrosion inhibitor); agricultural chemicals, aromatic oils, germicides, anti-sludge agents

Nonyl phenol and the related nonyl phenol ethoxylates are used in pesticide products as inert ingredients and as adjuvants added by the pesticide user

Nonylphenol is used as a catalyst in the curing of epoxy resin

Nonylphenol is mainly used as binders for ink and an intermediate material for production of nonyl phenol ethoxylate, which is one of the surfactants used in cleaning agents

It is also used as intermediate of anti-oxidants for rubber
