Benzoic acid , C7H6O2 (or C6H5COOH), is a colorless crystalline solid and a simple aromatic carboxylic acid. The name is derived from gum benzoin, which was for a long time its only known source. Benzoic acid occurs naturally in many plants and it serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of many secondary metabolites.
1. It is use in the production of glycol benzoates for the application of plasticizer in adhesive formulations
2. It is also used in the manufacture of alkyd resins and drilling mud additive for crude oil recovery applications
3. It is used as a rubber polymerization activators and retardants
4. Benzoic acid is converted to its salts and esters for the use of preservative application in foods, drugs and personal products
